I'm an architect and all I seem to do is solve design issues so after about 35 years of doing this, regardless of the topic, I just subconsciously fixate on situations that I see need a clever design solution. So it was about March 12th that I read an article on how / why the Covid-19 virus was spreading so fast... airborne droplets floating in the air from sneezing / coughing sick people. It was saying these droplets were getting transferred around person to person by touch hands to hands then hand to face or floating mist droplet in the air to the vulnerable face and in the new person's mouth, nose and / or eyes. The N95 respirator over the mouth and nose would help keep the virus droplets / mist out. However, the eyes were basically a fly paper trap. I thought about this. I know we have shield but what is available is cumbersome and hardly something to toss 20-40 times a day if taking temperatures of many different possibly infected Covid-19 people. We don't have a disposable, transparent, really simple, face protector... so... and we nee one asap! I was doing other stuff, my mind kept coming back to this problem. I was subconsciously trying to solve this void. Soon I was picking up all kinds of materials needed to build muck-ups / samples and as I was brainstorming attempting to figure out a really simple & inexpensive transparent face shield that would protect someones face and eye from the mists / droplets / particles (and hands touching) that are getting passed around and then eventually into the pours of the next person... I tried many different ideas over the next five / six days and then I had the "ah-ha" as I was driving on rt # 1. I then got the specific materials then raced to my home lab and built a prototype & it worked! It was raw but the concept worked. The next day I submitted descriptions and drawings to the USPTO and got a patent pending # just to be safe. I've perfected this concept for a really inexpensive, eye, disposable face shield. I have since reached out to contacts I thought might be able to help get it out because it is needed to be out asap to help contain this rapidly spreading virus. That is where I am now about ten days later here on March 23, 2020 as Covid-19 is doubling in cases every third day currently with 378,904 cases worldwide!
